Which is the Best Grill Thermometer to buy in 2013?

Oregon Scientific AW131 Grill Right Wireless Talking Oven/Barbeque Thermometer

Oregon Scientific AW131 Grill Right Wireless Talking Oven/Barbeque Thermometer

The temperature probe and main units of this oven and barbeque thermometer communicates wirelessly; no need to stick around the grill to wait for your meat to be done. You can go off somewhere else with the main unit up to 330 ft. away. The main unit can “speak” in 5 languages (Spanish, Danish, German, French, and English and the menus will correspond to your language selection. It does speak, as it has 2 verbal alarms, or you can opt for one of the 3 sound options if you don’t fancy a robotic voice telling you dinner’s ready. Just key in the type of meat and the desired doneness and you’re set to grill. The LCD on the main unit tells you the settings and the internal temperature of the meat.

This unit has a whole lot of features, and for the not so tech-savvy it can be a little bit confusing. The instruction manual is there to help but some report that it is poorly written. For the majority who got it figured out in no time, the thermometer is a great little tool to use in a smokehouse, a grill or in the oven. The probe does have its fair share of fragility issues, a common issue for a thermometer of this type and design. With proper care and use the unit can last many Thanksgiving dinners, just be sure to have replacement probes in hand.

Maverick ET732 Wireless Grill/Meat/BBQ Thermometer + Meathead Temperature Magnet

Maverick ET732 Wireless Grill/Meat/BBQ Thermometer + Meathead Temperature Magnet

The whole package consists of a meat temperature chart, a main unit with LCD display and a wireless transmitter unit with two probes. The two probes allow you to simultaneously monitor the barbecue and meat temperature. An alarm will go off when either goes below or beyond the set temperature. The receiver can display up to 572°F via its LCD screen and can stay connected to the transmitter up to 300 ft. away.

It is great little thermometer for smoking and barbecuing. Setting it up can be a bit tedious, and sometimes annoying if you’re not used to the controls. The transmitter is reliable and has a great range; even thick walls would pose little problems with connectivity to the receiver. The probe wires are braided-steel sleeved so it can withstand high heats and make them more reliable, but they only have a 90 day warranty. Having a replacement probe as a backup can become handy, as they may give problems at times you wouldn’t expect. It’s not a bad buy for the price.

iDevices iGrill Grilling/Cooking BBQ Thermometer

Now your iDevice can become a wireless thermometer receiver with the iGrill. The transmitter can connect to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch via Bluetooth and instantly turning them into a wireless grill thermometer. The iGrill app for your iDevice is available to download for free through iTunes. The app includes recipes, temperature monitors and options, standard cooking timer and reference charts. The iGrill can also serve as a standalone timer and temperature monitor when you don’t have an iDevice. It also comes with the 4 AA batteries needed to power it.

For those with an iDevice this would probably be the best grill thermometer to own. The app is useful and obviously more graphically stunning than the conventional LCD matrix display. Now, anything with an ‘i’ in them and is associated with iDevices usually are expensive, and this iGrill is no exception. The replacement probes, which by the way will start to break after some usage, are also quite pricey. Oh it works well don’t get me wrong, but whether you should spend your hard earned cash for something so…trivial, is up to you.
